Finally…some thoughts about HBO’s Girls

Dunham et al…you know, Girls

I was really really looking forward to HBO’s Girls by wunderkind Lena Dunham. I loved her movie Tiny Furniture and every scene they showed of Girls made it that much more appealing.

So I was bound to be disappointed, no?

Well, somewhat.

The first 2 episodes were almost there — funny, awkward, kinda sad…but not all there. It’s not that the acting isn’t good, all four of the leads are entertaining. Dunham writes well for her contemporaries, even those who don’t have vaginas. But there was just something missing. A lack of drama, perhaps? It felt that there wasn’t as much at stake.

Hanna, so unsure of who she is or wants to be

Episodes 3 was much improved. I guess the simplest thing is to say that something finally happened, if want to call VD ‘something happening’. And episode 4 really set things in motion when Hanna’s (Dunham) diary is discovered and its dirty little secrets come pouring out.

If the rest of the season is more like episodes 3 and 4, then the season should end up much better than it started.

But there is something else has kept me coming back. Every episode, even the ones that have not been that successful have moments of unblinking truth. A scene where you forget these are actors on a screen. In episode 1, Hanna explains to her non-boyfriend sexual partner (aka guy she sleeps with) why she got her tattoos. She talks about how she put on weight and needed to take control of her body, somehow. It’s so open and naked, you believe it has to be true. She’s not saying it for sympathy, but it’s something she’s absorbed into her life story and has become matter of fact.

In episode 2 Hanna is at a job interview that is going swimmingly. Comedian Mike Birbiglia is interviewing her and they’re clicking. He seems ok with her lack of experience and she is encouraged by their easy banter. They chat about Brooklyn and bars and in one instant, Hanna forgets that this is not a date, not some casual encounter. This is a job interview and she cracks one rape joke too many. It’s so easy to step over that line, to forget about the line and just rams through it. Thankfully this has never happened to me during a job interview, but oh so many conversations have taken a terrible awkward turn that becomes inescapable…

Episode 3 had two moments that struck me – one more plausible than the other. Marnie, Allison Williams, is so bored with her puppy dog of a boyfriend that she’s almost ready to run away with Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone as artist Booth Jonathan. Almost. Instead she is too scared to really leave but finds a way to, ahem, release the tension she’d been feeling.

Later in the episode, Hanna confront her ex-bf, the only guy she slept with in college. Surprising no one once he announces that he’s now a “dance curator”, this ex is gay gay gay. Their ensuing conversation is funny and sad, and you can just see the moment when it becomes bitter and bitchy. She’s so hurt and so obviously trying to piece together the shattered internal images of her past, and he can help himself. It’s the sort of conversation everyone has had with an ex, gay or not. It always ends badly.

But the moment that made me decide to stick with this show for the rest of the season regardless came in this past week’s episode. Hanna’s non-bf, Adam, sends her a picture of his penis wrapped in some sort of fur, quickly followed by a text saying that photo wasn’t for her. Even though she responds in kind, after hearing some reality from her new co-workers, she goes to Adam’s house to break up with him.

When he asks her what she wants, after first she can’t really define it:  she says she doesn’t want a boy friend, but “I want someone who wants to hang out all the time, and thinks I’m the best person in the world, and who wants to have sex with only me.”But that becomes a much more heartbreaking scene as she breaks down and tells him that as much as she likes him, she can’t keep seeing him. “I really care about you and I don’t want to anymore because it feels too shitty.”

This speech leads to Adam reaching for Hanna, and her muttered “Oh god” just slayed me. It’s that point where you know you’re doing something that you know you are going to regret, giving in to something you wish so hard you could avoid, but you just have to do it… Who hasn’t had that simultaneous feeling of regret and abandon?

Yes, none of these things are fun to relive, but they aren’t Carrie buying $400 shoes and making some off the cuff quip about men and sex and lunch boxes. It’s that reality, the dialog that can feel like it’s a memory rather than something on screen, that makes me really interested to see what else is coming down the pike and allows me to forgive the times the show seems to meander.

Remember, episode 1 is free online. Worth watching, especially because it just gets better from here.

Tenacious D’s New Song, New Video

Not your typical rock gods.

Gosh The D rocks so hard.

After one kick ass season on HBO named Tenacious D, a platinum selling album named Tenacious D, and one failure of a movie called “The Pick of Destiny” (shoulda stuck with what worked, guys), Tenacious D didn’t put out an album for a while. Jack Black’s movie career took off, a bit, and Kyle Gass got some good bit work and kept playing with his other bands. They toured announced one album, then another, but nothing come of it. But now “The D” are back with a new album, Rize of the Fenix.

Damned straight

With an opening line about the failure of their movie, Jack Black and Kyle Gass manage to reincarnate their rock star alter-egos without pretending that the failure that kept them underground for so long never happened. The title song Rize of the Fenix is a phenomenal mix of typical D musical awesomeness, combined with a newfound insecurity about the future with the failures of the past heavy on their shoulders. What if their new album is a bomb? What if the fans don’t want them anymore and laser off their D tattoos? In typical Tenacious D fashion, they beat those insecurities with sweet guitar riffs and some sweet sweet special effect.

New album of course means new video and The D’s videos are always excellent. Case in point, Wonderboy:

Second case in point, their amazing song Tribute:

Rize of the Fenix gives you that D magic, but with the added touch of the breakdown in effect. We see the green screen crumble, the fans become disillusioned, and the two members of Tenacious D wonder if they should give it all up.  Needless to say, they rock their way back to the top – in the video at least.

The Avengers: Hulk Smash Good

Avengers…Assemble!

It really shouldn’t surprise anyone that The Avengers is as good as it is.

The ingredients were there – several blockbuster movies leading up to it, including the incredibly fun Thor and the incredibly enjoyable Captain America. And all the originators of those characters were on board, except the Hulk, but more on that later. The script was penned by the director, the inimitable Joss Whedon (Cabin in the Woods, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly…).

And yes, it all could have gone horribly, terribly wrong.

But it didn’t.

The Avengers is one of the best action films I’ve ever seen. Was it perfect? No, but that’s ok. It was pretty darned close.

It ties together all its predecessors if not 100% neatly, than at least not incredulously. (Tesseract anyone…?) And in a movie with so many characters – Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Loki, the Hulk, Nick Fury – it would be easy for any one of them to become a stock character, someone who exists merely to fill in space. It is to the credit of both actor and director, that this doesn’t become the case.  Everyone has a fabulous introduction, and everyone a real character moment, some a few.

Avengers Roll Call

We feel the confusion that Steve Rogers/Cpt. America has about being in this brave new world, where honor and duty aren’t the same words they were when he was last awake. We see the conflict Thor struggles with trying to both save Loki (his brother…adopted) and stop him. We see the pain that Hawkeye goes through when he realizes what Loki used him for and the desire for revenge that dictate everything he does during the final battle. We experience the moments of hesitance in the cocksure attitude of Tony Stark/Ironman that lead to his moment of selflessness. We sense the anger bubbling just below the surface every time Bruce Banner/The Hulk enters the room, his violent and destructive rage just seconds away from erupting. And we see the deft manner in which Natasha Romanov/Black Widow dispatches with everyone and everything, even her own fears and insecurities.

Hiddlston’s Loki…Shakespeare and Asgard

And Loki. While the movie really belongs to the Hulk, Loki is a formidable enemy. His need for acceptance and power and revenge fuels him even beyond the point of reason. Tom Hiddleston brings a Shakespearean sadness and slightly insanity to his Loki. This recitation he did of a famous monologue from Henry V make it all believable:

Not sure what this is…but its sorta creepy

It is because of all these tiny character moments that this movie succeeds.  Action is action and explosions are explosions, and yes both are done well here. The attack sequence on the floating headquarters is spectacular, as is that inevitable destruction of Manhattan by an alien army, complete with the strangest giant flying robotic worm type creatures. So have no fear – the crash/bang/boom you need from your superhero movie is there…but just elevated.

Plus, this movie is FUNNY. Damned funny. So funny that I need to go see it again now. Much of the humor is in the quick-witted dialog that we have come expect from Joss Whedon, but he made the most of the physical humor available to him. The all out fight between Thor and Iron Man squeezes intense comedy from what could otherwise be mere male posturing. Not to mention half the moments the Hulk is on screen.

But to say any more about that would be to spoil it.

Like all these movies do, The Avengers ends on a moment that opens it up for a sequel. Whether it will live up to its progenitor is unclear, and I hope they keep Whedon on board. But the prospects all in all, are good. Smashingly good.

CW Renews Supernatural – Lovers of eye-candy rejoice!

Even though I haven’t written about Supernatural, it is easily one of my favorite guilty pleasures. Two (very attractive) brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester fight evil. Evil in the form of folklore, ghosts, and especially demons.

Jensen “Dean” Ackles

Jared “Sam” Padalecki

It was the demons that really gave Supernatural it’s unique spin. The show created its own mythology around these demons, leading to a possible apocalypse and final showdown between good and evil…or sorta good and really evil. (Spoiler: The apocalypse didn’t happen).

Plus the show created an amazing way to be self-referential by creating a writer who wrote books about the Winchesters, as if they were fictional beings. There was even an episode where they met their biggest fan. She was intense. Not to mention the episode entitled “The French Mistake” (kudos to you Mel Brooks fans who get that reference) where Sam and Dean are thrust into our world where they are Jared and Jensen. Hilarity ensues.

Apart from the engaging mythology, Supernatural gives us humor. Oh the humor! Hard to imagine a show about brothers hunting down the demon that killer their mother also being funny, but it is. There is always humor to be found at the end of the world, even when your own brother has been taken over by Lucifer and you are fighting him AND a bunch of angels who want you to become Michael the archangel.

See? Funny.

Supernatural also gives us a great cast of supporting characters. Deadwood‘s Jim Beaver as Bobby, the brother’s erstwhile father and mentor. Just the thought of Bobby and I think of the word “idjit!” And the angel/new God, Castiel played by Misha Collins. He matches Jared and Jensen’s low, scratchy talking and gives them a run for their money on the sexy. Not to mention that Misha’s twitter feed is amazing. Here is his response to the news that the show was renewed:

Here is his photo, so you can put a face to the funny:

Sexy photo of Misha

Silly photo of Misha

But at its core the show is about Sam and Dean. These are brothers who have literally held each other’s lives in their hands. Both have died, gone to hell, gone to heaven, and been brought back to life. They watched the people they love die right in front of them and occasionally caused those deaths. You believe Sam and Dean love each and would do anything for each other. So that is why even when the plot has meandered, I keep watching. For Sam, for Dean, and for their awesome Chevy Impala.

SNL season finale on May 19. And the host?

After a pretty good season (Fallon and Melissa Maccarthy all the way!), SNL has decided to end the series with Mick Jagger as both host and musical guest.

Pretty, young Jagger before the booze and the drugs and the women

Not so pretty Jagger AFTER the booze and the drugs and the women

O…K…

So he’s been the musical guest before, but has never hosted.

I did however find this sketch online, full of Fallon’s Jagger impression-y goodness.

So, I guess he’ll be OK?  Musicians are always such a mixed bag as hosts. Not everyone can be a Timberlake.

True Blood is back! No sparkle vampires here…

EW just posted this.

Give me more naked Eric and there will be no crying

Because of course now that summer is coming that means more of our favorite vampire series (I’m ignoring you Vampire Diaries and 2 Broke Girls…), True Blood!  And these aren’t your “let’s be nice to humans and eat bears” sort. Even if the name of the is the name of a blood alternative. These are some dangerous vampires. Some sexy sexy dangerous vampires.

And werewolves, werepanthers, fairies, witches, shapeshifters….

I hope that the Sookie/Eric/Bill love triangle is put on the back burner for a while, even if it means not as much naked Eric. I’m sorta done with that story for a while.

He’s got my heart even if he doesn’t have Sookie’s

And if the rumors are true and Denis O’Hare aka Russell Edgington is back, this will be one hell of a season.

Edgington seen here talking to the bloody remains of his lover

But of course as much fun as it was watching him run around town with Talbot’s remains, this is why we love him:

That is the best handoff to a weather girl I’ve ever seen.

Here’s hoping the new season is half as much fun.

Game of Thrones: Lego Theme!

A lego version of the opening credits! It’s about time.

This is pretty remarkable for the time and detail that went into this. I especially like the house and sigil details.

My favorite is probably Harrenhal, even though it seems the least complicated. Getting the right amount of decay and dilapidation for Harrenhal is key, and they truly capture its spirit.

Plus I enjoyed how the theme music was almost the real music. Just enough to avoid copyright issues. Well done.

SNL Classic: Who’s More Grizzled

What do you get when you combine Robert Duvall and Garth Brooks in a wig and plaid?

That’s right, the classic game show Who’s More Grizzled, which has categories such as “Dead Wives”, “Mining”, and “Ailments.”

This was during the heyday of Norm MacDonald as the SNL go-to for game show hosts. Even then he seemed to be in on a joke that no one else was aware of, god bless him.

Plus, that’s one hell of a speed round.

Nerdist Bowling, this time with Reggie Watts!

So Reggie Watts might not be as attractive as Jon Hamm or be able to bowl as well as Jon Hamm…but damn, he’s one talented mofo.

Similar to the Mad Men vs Nerdist bowling match, we get the Nerdist team (Chris Hardwick Mike Phirman of Hard and Phirm, Riki Lindhome, and Eli Braden) vs the Musical Comedians (Reggie Watts, Kate Micucci, Bo Burnham, and Nick Thune).

Kate Micucci (of Garfunkle and Oates) was a secret bowling whiz, Chris Hardwick continues to show his bowling dominance, and Bo Burnham didn’t know that you shouldn’t wear loafers to bowl.

Also, there’s a cat keyboard. Meow.

http://youtu.be/-YtgAD7B5Ok

And lucky for us, Watts created a bowling themed musical number after the bowling fervor died down. The man’s pretty awesome.

New Trailer: The Dark Knight Rises

I wonder if it was always this way – multiple trailers for a film to hype it up. Didn’t we used to just get a teaser if we were lucky and then one trailer?

Of course with a movie like The Dark Knight Rises, you don’t really need anymore hype.

I like the quieter moments in the trailer, even though you know that in reality they are going to be full of loud booming action sounds – explosions, car crashes, guns, building falling down. All the trademark noises of the Dark Knight movies. Not to be confused with the sounds of the Batman TV show –

Ah, the sound effects of the 60's...

Of course we still know precious little about the plot, though we do know that there is a football field that implodes, Anne Hathaway hates rich people, Tom Hardy is still unintelligible, and Christian Bale needs a lozenge.

One slurs, the other rasps...will we understand any of it?

There’s a lot of expectations riding on this. I hope for Christopher Nolan’s sake it lives up to  all the fans’ hopes and dreams…

But if that awesome flyingmobile at the end of the trailer is any indication, he should be fine.

(also I know everyone and their mother posted this trailer, but what sort of movie fan would I be, were I to be lax and not follow suit?)
