New Trailer Alert: The Bourne Legacy

I like Jeremy Renner, action hero. He was great in The Avengers, clearly Oscar worthy in The Hurt Locker, and a good addition to MI:4.  So I have a good feeling about this one.

Much appreciate the lack of amnesia in this one, plus Ed Norton as bad guy is always intriguing. This movie also seems to be doing a nice melding with the original Bourne series, not just saying it has the same name and background and letting loose from there. Plus it’s being directed by Tony Gilroy who not only directed Michael Clayton, but wrote the screenplays for the Bourne Identity, Bourne Supremacy, and Bourne Ultimatum – clearly he knows his Bourne world.

Garfunkel and Oates – 29/31 (or the story of my life)*

*This was added in by me, not actually the name of the song.

Ah, Garfunkel and Oates, speakers of truth and wisdom. This song is about 1 woman, at age 29 and then 2 years later at age 31, and the dialog that ensues between them.

It’s amazing what a difference a couple of years can make.

I especially agree with Rikki’s assessment of the phrase “When god closes a door, he opens a window.” Not the same thing. Not the same thing at all.

Plus I’m sure I’d totally want to punch 29 year old me right in the face, though I was never all that cheery at any age.

Neil Patrick Harris – 2012 Tony Promos

NPH and Hugh Jackman are probably the 2 hosts of the Tony awards that will bring in viewers who don’t live in the NYC area.

They are dynamic, amusing, and both can actually carry a tune – essential I think for a Tony host.

Although I don’t have any favorites this year, having seen none of the nominated plays or musicals, I might tune in just for the spectacle. And for the promised-by-the-promo Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark performance…you never know, someone might fall and kill someone! (Though I remember they did a number last year, so not sure why they’re showing it this year).

As a reminder, here was NPH’s opening last year:

New Trailer Alert: Les Misérables

Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as Javert, Amanda Seyfried as Cosette, Eddie Redmayne as Marius, Anne Hathaway as Fantine and, wait for the best casting ever, Sasha Baron Cohen as Thénardier. All directed by Tom Hooper, director of The King’s Speech.

OK, I’m interested.

http://youtu.be/5slbuWpZwjg

While Anne Hathaway doesn’t have a Broadway powered voice, it’s not terrible. Plus, Jackman is a tried performer and Crowe has the look of Javert. And can’t you just see SBC singing “Master of the House”?

Prometheus – Get to know the ship, Prometheus

June 8 cannot come fast enough. Seriously.

Prometheus continues to be the movie I am most wanting to see this summer. Every glimpse into the film makes me want to see it even more.

As much as I want to avoid watching anything that will spoil it for me, it’s all just so darned cool!

Here is a look at the ship itself:

Game of Thrones – Season 3 Casting

Season 2 hasn’t ended yet and we’re already getting intel on season 3.

Entertainment Weekly got a hold of the list of the new characters that will be appearing in season 3 of Game of Thrones.

– Mance Rayder: Former Nights Watchman who became King Beyond the Wall. He is a bit of a badass with an axe to grind against those still on the Wall.

– Daario Naharis: A warrior and confident of Daenerys. Will he have his blue beard?

– Jojen Reed; Meera Reed: Been wondering where these two have been; a brother and sister who both have some second sight powers; friends to the two youngest Starks.

– Edmure Tully: Catelyn’s brother

– Ser Brynden Tully (The Blackfish): Catelyn’s uncle.

– Lady Selyse Florent: Stannis’ wife. Surprised they are keeping her as they almost seemed to write her off at the beginning of the season.

– Shireen: Stannis’ daughter. (see above)

– Olenna Redwyne (The Queen of Thorns): Margaery Tyrell’s grandmother. One savvy old lady with a sharp sharp tongue and a sharp sharp mind.

– Beric Dondarrion: Knight who is the leader of the famed group of outlaws, the Brotherhood Without Banners. This is the Brotherhood all those poor souls were being tortured over at Harrenhal.

– Thoros of Myr: A red priest, who rides with Dondarrion. Follower of R’hllor, just like Melissandre.

– Tormund Giantsbane: Wilding with a great great name

It would seem this is not all the new characters, just the ones the show runners were willing to divulge.

Will non-book readers be able to take in this huge influx of new characters or are they used to it at this point? I cannot think of too much casting oddly enough. Though, based solely on her work as the Dowager Countess, who DOESN’T see Maggie Smith as the Queen of Thorns?

She is SO the Queen of Thorns

Maybe Liam Neeson for Mance Rayder? He’s got the right look and has worn period costume in Rob Roy.

Rob Roy, Mance Rayder, Taken, Wolfpuncher, Neeson can do it all and with a sword and kilt

Anyone else have casting thoughts?

Game of Thrones: Blackwater

Some immediate thoughts about the most anticipated episode of season 2.

Starting the battle with fire

– It’s nice to know that Game of Thrones can actually do a battle that involves more than a mere handful of people. We didn’t get the chain and the battle was a bit dialed back, and  it wasn’t the Battle on the Trident or even the Battle of the Blackwater that we might have been imagining, but I think they acquitted themselves quite well.

Stannis’ fleet, just waiting to be killed

And now Stannis’s fleet on wildfire

– The explosion of wildfire on the Blackwater was the right amount of reality and and computer generated magic. What I always loved about the books was how magic crept in, seeped in. It was never Gandalf and his staff. The magic has been there, but on the edges. So when the wildfire took on that eerie green hue, it fulfilled that quasi-magic quotient.

Wildfire in motion, green and eerie

– Peter Dinklage owns this show. Tyrion’s growth from bon vivant in season 1 to leader of men in season 2 is in no way a surprise, but Dinklage has made it seem totally organic. His speech to the soliders in Kings Landing wasn’t poetry, but it struck to the heart of why the “smallfolk” will really fight. Not for the King who just ran back to his mother’s skirts at the first sign of real conflict, but for their own land and people and belongings. He doesn’t bother to pretend that Stannis and his men are cowards or incompetent, but recognizes them for their skills and for the danger they pose. The honesty in his rallying cry is inspiring – “Those are brave men knocking at our door. Let’s go and kill them.”

Tyrion addressing the troops

Even though I knew Tyrion wasn’t going to get out of the Battle of the Blackwater unscathed, it was shocking to see his face get sliced and god bless Pod who saved Tyrion’s ass. In the trailer for next week, when they call Tywin the hero of the Blackwater, I cringed inside, knowing how deep this will cut Tyrion, and how false it really is.

Podrick, badass

– While I do miss Arya and I’m curious to see how Jon is faring and I really want to see Theon continue to be his own worst enemy, I am happy that the show decided to stay at the battle. We did go between Cersei and all the other noble ladies cooped up in Maegor’s Holdfast and then back to the battle. This allowed us to see Cersei in all her drunken glory. Lena Headey is truly wonderful as Cersei and watching her slow descent this season has been a pleasure.

Losing Myrcella to Dorne, seeing Joffrey become an absolutely psychopath, missing Jamie, has all contributed to Cersei’s unsteadiness. She once again talks about how she should have been born a boy. The aspirations for noble women are as dire as they are for the poor ones in this world – life is just a bit more comfortable and you don’t have to worry about where your next meal is coming from.

Even her decision to kill Tommen when the tide of war seemed to be turning against the Lannisters is a way for her to try and take control in a world where she has very little real control. Sure she can terrorize Sansa and the other ladies or order around the servants, but she will never lead soliders or make the real governing decisions. And you just know that kills her.

– As this episode was written by George R. R. Martin himself, he gave us some absolutely fabulous character moments. The scene between Bronn and The Hound  in the brothel was more than a mere pissing contest; these are two men who see themselves in the other but who serve men who are at odd with each other. What Joffrey asks of The Hound is so much more base than what Tyrion asks from Bronn…but both ask the other to kill and each sellsword complies.

The Hound saying what we all think

The Hound and his Little Bird

We also get the scene with Sansa and Clegane in her room after Clegane had run from the front, really running from the fire. So much fire and so many horrifying memories for him. Sansa continues to represent something pure and innocent for him, even when he cannot help but terrify her and crush that innocence. Their scene in the book was one of my favorites in Clash of Kings, and both Rory McCann and Sophie Turner acted the hell out of that scene.

Will next week’s finale be as satisfying as the finale for season 1? I can hope, but there are a lot of loose ends to tie up so not sure if it will be as satisfying, which doesn’t mean it won’t be good.

A final plug for The National’s cover of “The Rains of Castamere”, the song the Lannister soldiers were singing in the brothel.  Tywin seems to always ride in at the end and save the day, doesn’t he?

True Blood – Another new trailer

While the first True Blood trailer introduced us to more of the Authority (and Chris Meloni) than we had previously seen and the teaser was just some good tongue in cheek humor, we do get more of a whiff of what’s to come when the show returns on June 10. And thank god it looks like fun because I will be in mourning over the end of another season of Game of Thrones.

So it would seem that Sookie is using her fairy powers a bit more, Andy is once again anti-vamp, the rift between Pam and Eric hasn’t fully healed, and Lafayette is not really aboard the Sookie train now that Tara is dead and buried in Sook’s backyard.

I’m cool with all of that.

But, again, the best part of these trailers is the resuscitation of Russell Edgington. While “I want to gorge on human blood because I like it” doesn’t have the same ring as “We will eat you after we eat your children,” he seems as batshit crazy as ever.

Also in True Blood news, AfterElton compiled the 30 greatest True Blood moments. I appreciate the lack of Marnie, but where’s Franklin and his amazing texting abilities?

Jimmy Fallon’s Downton Sixbey

The cast all “warred” up for season 2

I haven’t written much about Downton Abbey, but I enjoy it.  It’s good stuff.

Why am I not more effusive? Mostly because of the second season which took the brilliance of the first season and truly soapified it.

She’s so Christlike

The return of Patrick or is it the return of “Patrick”, Matthew’s momentary inability to walk, Edith’s affair with the country farmer, the entire saga of Ethel and her poor decisions, the death of Saint Lavinia, the death of Saint William and the prolonged quasi-love story between Sybil and the Irish, anarchist chauffer.  And don’t even get me started on what happened with Bates in season 2. All these plot points just seemed too much and too irrelevant to what we all really cared about: Lady Mary and Cousin Matthew figuring out that they were right for each other all along.

Will these 2 crazy kids stay together?

Thank god the UK believes in doing Christmas episodes, because it was only during that episode that we got some legitimate closure on the season.

So it’s not that much of a surprise that Downton Abbey has been a treasure trove of possible parody, including the cut-out paper dolls from Vulture.

We all need a little Dowager “What is a week end?” Countess in our lives

I always thought that O’Brien and Thomas were sort of one dimensional…

The best one so far seems to be Jimmy Fallon’s “Downton Sixbey”. They even got the opening sequence right.

The casting of ?uestlove as the heir to “Downton Sixbey” and Fred Armisen as Hedith was some inspired casting. And using Higgins as Bates, complete with iron foot was a stroke of genius.

This week Fallon did a part two of “Downton Sixbey”, which was just as hilarious as the first one:

Between Hedith’s “n-word” faux pas, and Whoopi’s everything, this was perfect.

I would watch an entire series of “Downton Sixbey” even if Carson Daly can’t keep his damned cool….

Game of Thrones Soundtrack …?

Did you know that there was a soundtrack for the Game of Thrones?

Really? Cuz I had no clue. Thanks to Vulture for the heads up on that one.

House Reyne’s sigil looks mighty similar to the lion for House Lannister…

But turns out that there is a soundtrack and for season 2, they got the band The National to sing the “Rains of Castamere”, which tells the story of the Castamere Rebellion, by the House Reyne that put down by one Tywin Lannister himself.

The rebellion, which was actually against Tytos Lannister, Tywin’s father, resulted in the utter destruction of House Reyne and House Tarbeck (Reyne’s partner in the rebellion). One would imagine that Tywin’s reputation for being a ruthless SOB started early.

Lyrics to the song’s refrain are as follows:

And who are you, the proud lord said,
that I must bow so low?
Only a cat of a different coat,
that’s all the truth I know.
In a coat of gold or a coat of red,
a lion still has claws,
And mine are long and sharp, my lord,
as long and sharp as yours.
And so he spoke, and so he spoke,
that lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o’er his hall,
with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o’er his hall,
and not a soul to hear

Nice and depressing, just as good ol’ George RR would have it.

Here’s The Nationals singing it, with the proper dirge-like setting:

Not GoT related, but I love The National’s song and video for Conversation 16, starring two very recognizable TV peoples:
